October 2010

I have been clearing some beds for some overwintering vegetables. Including one of my favorites, Garlic! At work we get very excited about Garlic, and even dedicate an afternoon to a Garlic Fest. Where we sample different varieties by eating them raw. You can really taste the flavors and understand the subtle differences between the varieties! And since everyone around you is also enjoying the tastings you don't have to worry about garlic-breath!

This year I chose to plant Early Italian Purple, Chesnok, Dujansky, and Georgian Crystal Hardneck.

I also planted some Sweet Red and Walla Walla Onions to over winter. I will be harvesting some carrots and beets the next few weeks. My Winterbor Kale is still producing like crazy, I can't believe that the plants are actually taller than me!

I will put the beds to rest, since I will not be around the garden very much this winter. As I pull the rest of my veggies out I am covering the beds with a thick layer of leaf mulch to add organic matter to the soil for next season.
